The global UN theme this year for the International Women's Day is “equal access to education, training and science and technology: pathway to decent work for women”. Nine women workers from tea estates at Fetteresso, Dickoya, Abbotsleigh, Queensbury, Meddecombra, Dayagama West, Mount Vernon, Oliphant, and Kolapatana respectively were in Colombo on March 8th on an exposure visit to both the city and to the tea business in which they have worked for decades.

Sri Lanka’s Bogawantalawa Tea Estates have become one out of four tea firms in the world to acquire the “Social Accountability 8000” by adhering to ILO prerequisites.

Accordingly under the SA 8000, Bogawantalawa has complied with ILO prerequisites such as freedom of association, non-discrimination, wage & benefits, fair working hours and health & safety. BTE is among 4 tea companies in the world; one being Tata teas and 2 other Kenyan companies, who has achieved this prestigious social accountability certification so far.

This year, two plantation companies – Watawala Plantations Plc and Bogawantalawa Tea Estates – emerged winners at the National Business Excellence Awards of the National Chamber of Commerce. These awards, presented under stringent and independent evaluations, are proof of the growth in competitiveness of plantation companies, said the Planters Association of Ceylon.

Adding more strength to the teas that are brewed under Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC (BTE), the ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’ has identified Bogawantalawa Valley as one of the top ten places in the world to have a cup of tea. Bogawantalawa Valley has been rated with locations such as The Ritz London, Trans-Siberian Railway Russia, Yueyang China, Temple-strewn Uji district in Japan and the historical Inca Trail in Peru.

Bogawantalawa Tea Estates is in the process of negotiating a joint venture agreement worth US $2 million with a foreign partner to establish a project to manufacture iced tea for export through a company Walters Bay Bogawantalawa Estates (Pvt) Ltd incorporated in Sri Lanka on March 25.

Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC Chairman Dinesh Ambani, signed the BOI agreement on behalf of “Walters Bay Bogawantalawa Estates (Pvt) Ltd” to setup a state-of-the-art processing centre to manufacture iced tea in packaged form for export to Walters Bay US, in fulfillment of its contract obligations with the global multiple brands.
