Our Environment
When nature and people are one
Sustainable management of natural resources is vital and these activities are managed by Forestry & Timber Division (FTD) of the Company in collaboration with the estate management by introducing diverse agro forestry models. Agro Forestry could be simply defined as integrating agriculture, forestry and Dairy Farming / Animal husbandry into a synergistic system.

Selected bare lands and marginal tea fields have been converted to Plantation forestry, such as Eucalyptus grandis & Calliandra calothyrsus , with the objectives of,

  • Minimizing soil erosion & land degradation.
  • Improve soil physical, chemical & biological properties.
  • Be a carbon neutral plantation while enhancing the bio diversity.
  • Be a self-sufficient of timber fuel wood requirement & Commercial forestry.

All the activities including tending / silvicultural operations, harvestings etc, are being conducted according to forestry master plan 2008/2012 and national forestry policies, rules and regulations.

There are identified Timber Blocks in eleven Estates of up-country and based on the latest census carried out by BTEL there are 125,140 Eucalyptus grandis trees available at various growth stages under managed Plantation blocks. These have been planted during last couple of years and managed scientifically. The Central Nursery of the FTD is located at Wanarajah Estate which consist plants of Eucalyptus grandis and Calliandra calothyrsus.

A pilot project (Integrating dairy farming, Forestry and Tea) has commenced at Osborne estate with the objectives of,
  • Enhance the soil fertility and productivity in Lower Dick Oya Estates.
  • Improve the productivity of Lower Dick Oya estates by using excess labours and unproductive fields through the integrated farming system.
  • Enhance the quality of life and nutritional status of the residential workers through additional income generated by this project.
CDM project
Consequent to the conversion of the tea factories (boilers and heaters) from liquid fuel into solid fuel wood in the upcountry estates, we are in the process of obtaining CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) status through a “Bio Mass Thermal Energy Carbon Emission Project” for Loinorn, Campion, Bogawana & Bogawantalawa factories.

The project has categorized into a small scale carbon project according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the expected Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) is around 3,300 t of CO2 per annum. The project estimated to sell the CER for the six consecutive years.
